Job Description:


The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) seeks expressions of interest from suitably experienced persons to assist the Curriculum Development Unit (CDU) develop support materials for the Year 1-3 syllabus. These materials are designed to assist teachers implement the syllabus in classrooms. They provide information about teaching and learning strategies, approaches to class-based assessment and a sequence of lesson plans that teachers may adapt to suit their circumstances.

Writers will use prescribed specifications to design materials for each learning area and year groups. They will work under the supervision of Curriculum Coordinators in the CDU responsible for specific learning areas.

Several positions for writers will become available in 2016. One position will be available for a Coordinator of Writers. The Coordinator will liaise between the writers and the Curriculum Officers in the CDU to support the development of the teacher guides.

Applicants should be good writers and speakers of Bislama, have creative ideas for the design of teaching and learning programs, and preferably be competent users of Microsoft Word or compatible word processing software.

Deliverables
Writers are required to provide for their allocated learning area and Year group:
  • Examples of planning and programming from the syllabus outcomes
  • Sample assessment strategies examples of teaching and learning strategies
  • Collated feedback from teachers in structured trialling of the materials in schools
  • Final drafts of teacher guides that incorporate feedback from trialing and peer review processes

The Coordinator of Writers is responsible for quality assuring the work of writers and providing feedback and mentoring to ensure the teacher guides are developed to a high standard and within an agreed timeframe. The Coordinator will ensure:
  • Provision of direction and support
  • Outputs are delivered on time and to a high standard
  • The collective wisdom of writers is harnessed through a team approach
  • Quality assurance processes are adhered to in accordance to requirements of the CDU
  • Realistic timelines and milestones are established to ensure writers work to schedule and deliver agreed outputs. 

Conditions
Engagement may be temporary secondment from a current position in a school or through a short-term contract for a period up to 12 months. The writers will be located within the Curriculum Development Unit and be expected to work public sector hours from 7.30 to 4.30 pm.
The first round of appointments will made for the period from Monday 18 January to 31 December 2016. These dates may be subject to minor variation.

    Criteria:
    Applicants will be included on the register of writers and/or coordinator of writers based on the following criteria:
    1. Teaching qualifications and classroom experience
    2. Good writing skills and experience using Word for Windows or similar word processing software
    3. Demonstrated ability to develop quality teaching and learning materials
    4. An ability to work as a member of a team in an educational setting
    5. *Evidence of ability to coordinate a team of writers to deliver curriculum materials
